Denials represent unpaid services which results in either lost or delayed revenue. Most practices have a 5-10% denial rate which is troublesome but even more so when taking into account that over ½ of the denials are never reworked. Multiple team members from the front office, to clinicians, to the back office/billing staff and possibly even the physicians may be involved in researching and appealing denials.  The more resources required to obtain payment for services rendered, the higher your cost to collect reaches. 

 

In addition the volume and type of denials is a moving target and can quickly increase and decrease as payer policies change.  The importance of involving all areas of operations in the denials management and reporting process cannot be overstated.  It is the key to identifying and correcting root causes.
